Courier Insurance Guide UK
Standard car or van insurance is invalid the moment you start delivering goods for payment. All UK couriers need hire-and-reward (H&R) insurance — this is not optional. Driving without it is illegal and any claims will be rejected.
Types of Courier Insurance
Hire & Reward (H&R) insurance is the essential foundation, covering you to carry goods for reward. Goods-in-Transit insurance protects the parcels themselves if lost or damaged. Public Liability covers you if you injure someone or damage property while delivering. Fleet insurance covers multiple vehicles under one policy.
How Much Does It Cost?
Annual hire-and-reward policies typically cost £1,500–£3,000 for a van, depending on your vehicle, age, driving history, and the platforms you work for. Day-rate policies start from around £10–15/day and are useful for occasional courier work.
Platform-Specific Requirements
Amazon Flex requires you to hold your own H&R insurance. Evri and Yodel also require personal H&R cover. DPD owner-drivers must have full courier insurance as part of their franchise agreement. Always check the specific requirements of your platform before purchasing.
