DPD Owner Driver Insurance UK: Cover Requirements for ODF Franchisees
DPD owner-driver franchisees (ODF) must arrange their own hire and reward (H&R) motor insurance, goods in transit (GIT) insurance, and public liability (PL) insurance — all to minimum levels set in the DPD franchise agreement. DPD does not provide these policies but may offer access to insurance schemes. You can use any FCA-authorised insurer that meets the franchise requirements.
The Three Policies ODF Franchisees Must Hold
Hire and Reward motor insurance: a legal requirement for any vehicle carrying goods for payment. Must explicitly cover parcel delivery work and the vehicle weight class you operate. Goods in Transit insurance: required by the DPD franchise agreement to a minimum limit set out in your agreement. Protects DPD parcels in your care against loss, theft and damage. Check the per-parcel limit is sufficient for the value of goods DPD ships. Public Liability insurance: required by the franchise agreement. Check the minimum limit in your specific franchise documentation. Employers' Liability is a legal requirement if you engage any staff or subcontractors, even casually (legal minimum £5m).
DPD Does Not Mandate a Specific Insurer
DPD does not require you to use a particular insurer for ODF franchise insurance. Provided the cover meets the minimum levels and terms in your franchise agreement, you can use any FCA-authorised insurer or broker. When getting quotes, be explicit that you are a DPD ODF franchisee and provide the relevant insurance clauses from your franchise agreement so the insurer can confirm the wording meets DPD's requirements. Some specialist courier insurance brokers are familiar with ODF requirements and can help verify policy wording.
Key Policy Wording Checks
Before committing, confirm: the policy explicitly permits DPD ODF / parcel delivery franchise work; the GIT cover extends to goods temporarily stored at home between collection and delivery; named-driver restrictions do not prevent helpers from driving; the per-parcel GIT limit matches or exceeds DPD's requirement; and the annual mileage declared is realistic for a DPD round. Get the confirmation in writing. Inadequate cover is a breach of your franchise agreement and creates significant personal financial exposure.
